CAF satisfied with CHAN Tournament

Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football, Hicham El Amrani, says the Confederation is impressed with the on-going African Nations Championship (CHAN) taking place in South Africa.

Amrani told a media briefing in Cape Town, South Africa on Friday that the Confederation was also satisfied with the first two editions of the CHAN tournament.

He said that the aim of introducing the tournament had been achieved as it had received FIFA recognition as an A level tournament and had exposed African talents to international football.

“And, honestly, compared to the first and second editions, we have been very happy about the level of play.

“We have been satisfied about the new comers, we have witnessed great football from Burundi, Mauritania among others, from Mozambique, from Uganda, all those teams have exited from the first round.

“And that shows the continuous narrowing in gap in African football between all the teams, considering that all those players are evolving within their national league and those are Africa’s home champions.

“So, it just makes complete sense. But we are very happy about the level of play displayed and also the consideration now the Federations are giving and the nations are giving to this tournament.

“Some nations have previously never participated in this tournament and now they are fielding very strong teams,” Amrani said.

Amrani said 59 goals had been scored in 24 matches, an average of 2.5 goals per match.

“This is so far a very good tournament for us. We look forward to maintain a much higher attendance figure.

“From the development perspective, this is what gives us the actual temperature of African football because everybody playing here is evolving within national leagues of their respective countries,” He said.

Amrani said CAF was satisfied with the organization of the tournament and expressed the hope that more fans would attend the last round of matches of the tournament. (NAN)
