Ogungbe out as injury relapses

Ganiu Ogungbe will now miss Nigeria’s U20 World Cup clash against Saudi Arabia after his ankle injury relapsed, officials disclosed.

It was earlier believed that he will be fit and available for selection Saturday after he hurt his ankle in the match against Croatia on Wednesday in Armenia.

The Gateway central defender was also confident he will be fit to play, but he seemed to have hurt the injury during Thursday night training in Club Campestre in Pereira.

As a result of this latest development, Ogungbe’s place in the heart of the defence will likely be taken by Emmanuel Anyanwu, who has been playing at right back, while Chimezie Mbah or Felix Udoh will start as one of the fullbacks.

Ogungbe is also on a yellow card and should he get another booking against Saudi Arabia on Saturday, he will miss the second round match on August 10.

Bookings in both the first and second rounds will only be wiped away by the quarterfinal, officials revealed.

Ogungbe has formed a superb central defence partnership with Kenneth Omeruo, who features for Belgian club Standard Liege.

Both players played together in the build-up to the 2009 U17 World Cup in Nigeria before Ogungbe eventually missed the cut for the final squad to the tournament
