Siasia relieved Messi is absent

Nigeria’s coach, Samson Siasia (Pictured left)says he is relieved Lionel Messi will not play Wednesday’s friendly match against his country.

Siasia says the Super Eagles have a lot of quality but he is happy Messi is absent for the match.

“One player that has mesmerised the whole world both in the European Champions League, Spanish League and in the last World Cup is Lionel Messi and I must say I am relieved he is not here,” Siasia said.

“Having said that, I want to add that my team has its own quality and we want to give Nigerians something to be happy about even though the game against Ethiopia on Sunday is the more important game for us.”

The Nigerian coach added that he wants to set the records straight in the game on Wednesday.

Siasia has lost three times to Argentina, once as player in 1994 and twice as coach in 2005 (World Youth Championships) and 2008 (Olympic Games) and he says it will be a game of prestige.

“We don’t want to lose at home. We are playing for pride to win the game. I played against Argentina at the World Cup, scored but we still lost. I have also lost to them as a coach twice and I believe we can right the wrongs this time.”
