NPL postpones second stanza re-start

The Nigeria Premier League, NPL has postponed the restart of the second stanza of the league for the 5th time.

The second stanza which was supposed to start on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 has now been postponed indefinitely because of the riots in some Northern parts of the country.

According to the acting Chairman of NPL, Alhaji Shehu Gusau, the lives of players and officials must be safe guarded.

“We don’t have any choice but to postpone the re-start of the second stanza. The reports we are hearing is not good and we cannot jeopardise the lives of the players and officials.

“That is why we are postponing the commencement of the second round until we feel the time is right,” Gusau.

The Leaague's second stage was initially fixed for April 6, then April 20, and after a meeting, club owners asked for april 30.

The date was taken back to April 20 after a meeting by the NPL before this indefinite shift on Monday.

In a related development, the league body has also postponed the contract signing ceremony between the clubs and the sports kit manufacturing firm, Masita which should have come up today in Abuja.

The ceremony will come up at a later date.
