Super Eagles to play in Abuja

The Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Ethiopia will now be played in Abuja, Nigeria’s administrative capital, can authoritatively reveal.

The game is scheduled for March 26, 2011 and the head coach of the Super Eagles, Samson Siasia is believed to have agreed in principle with the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF on Abuja as the new venue.

The venue will be ratified and announced by the Executive board of the NFF after its meeting on Friday.

After the international friendly match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone in Lagos last month it was rumoured that the Super Eagles would not play in Lagos anymore because of the attitude of the fans to the players and the fact that the game is played on a synthetic pitch which some of the players complained about.

The game was first rumoured to have been fixed for Kaduna but it now seems Abuja has received the mandate to host the game even though the Lagos State government may want to throw a spanner in the works in their bid to still host the game.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola recently constituted a 9-man committee to ensure the continuous success of the Super Eagles as they continue to play in Lagos.

The committee had Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele as chairman. Other members are Austin Okocha (Jayjay); Victor Ikpeba; Peter Rufai; Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President General, Nigeria Football and Other Sports Supporters Club; Onochie Anibeze; Innocent(Tu-Face) Idibia, musician; Filade Olumide, PRO Sports MYSSD and Mrs. Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Secretary of the Committee.

However it is expected that after the meeting of the Executive committee of the NFF on Friday, Abuja would finally be ratified as venue of the game.
Samson Siasia told that the game will be played in Abuja.

“I have reached an agreement with the NFF to play the game in Abuja and I do not see the venue changing again,” Siasia said.
