Club owner slams Globacom

A member of the congress of the NPL has given telecommunications giants, Globacom some hard knocks over their decision to contest the title sponsorship of the Nigeria Premier League.

Though he chose to be anonymous on this issue because of repercussions that may come the way of his club if he speaks out, the club owner told that Globacom had no right to even contest in the first place since they owe the League close to one billion naira (about $7m) from last season’s sponsorship agreement.

“We in the club owners association are not even too happy with the NPL for allowing Globacom even become part of the bidding process in the first place. They owe us and have not paid yet they want to continue sponsoring the League; where does that happen?

“You see that we just won the case in court and they have been ordered to pay up all they owe. By right they should not have been allowed to be part of the bidding process in the first place,” the congress member said.

However, despite this, the congress of the NPL on Thursday agreed to discontinue the previous agreement that rival telecommunications providers, MTN sponsor the Nigeria Premier League despite announcement them as sponsors and defending their decision two weeks ago.

Pundits believe the whole power play is meant to return Globacom as sponsors of the League, an insinuation our source disagrees with.

“The truth is that there were a lot of things wrong with the process that brought MTN in as title sponsors of the league but it does not mean we are backing Globacom. If we had our way we would not even want Globacom to be part of the new bid but we must correct the wrongs.

“We want to discourage third party bidding. We do not agree with Total Promotions bidding on behalf of any company. Any group that wants to sponsor the League must do it themselves and not through any one.

“We believe the action we took despite what critics say is eventually best for Nigerian football.”

The Nigeria Premier League is already in its 14th week without a title sponsor.
